The World Is Running Out of Children
The world is running
out of children.
For the first time in the modern era, the number of people under 15 is shrinking — even as the human race keeps growing.

We picture the human race as an ever-growing crowd. That picture is quietly breaking. The orange band is everyone on Earth under 15 — and it has stopped rising. It crested at 2.03 billion in 2020 and has been sliding ever since. The dashed line above it, the total population, never got the memo: it still climbs toward 8.2 billion.
The result is the defining rift of our century: a world with more people, and fewer children. This is not a projection. It already happened.
A falling line that never turns up
The simplest machine behind all of this is one number: how many children a woman has over her lifetime.

Globally, women are now having about 2.19 children each. The “replacement rate” — the magic number needed to hold a population flat once mortality is accounted for — is about 2.1. We are hovering just above it.
But notice the shape of the line: it never turns up. Every dip is a one-way trip. The world is not having a rough patch; it is walking a one-way path toward fewer children.
Because the global population keeps growing while births fall, 2024 brought about 32 million fewer newborns than if birth rates had stayed frozen at 2010 levels — a silent annual shortfall equal to the populations of Australia and Canada combined.
The world splits in two
A global average is a disguise. Behind the number, countries sort into two very different camps.

The orange pile is 2024. It has slid left of 2010’s outline — the entire world shifted toward fewer children. And look where the bulk now sits: past the 2.1 replacement line, to its left. More than half of the world’s countries, 141 out of 260, are now below replacement.
The tails tell the rest. On the far right, a small group of 71 countries — concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa — still have three or more children per woman. The centre is empty. This is a story of two worlds.
Fewest and most: the ends of the line

At one end, women in Macao average 0.58 children — half a child apiece. South Korea is at 0.75, Hong Kong 0.84, Singapore 0.97. The lowest-fertility places on Earth have dropped to roughly half the rate they had in 2010.
At the far other end, Chad leads at 6.03, Somalia 6.01, the Democratic Republic of the Congo 5.98. But even here, momentum is one-way: nearly every dot sits to the right of its bar — meaning even the highest-fertility countries are falling.

Deepest red-brown is below 1.5 births per woman — the emptiest. The copper mid-tones straddle the 2.1 replacement line. Slide back to 2010 and the map is noticeably lighter; slide to 2024 and the dark band has swallowed East Asia, most of Europe, and crept across Latin America.
That darkening is the whole story, written on a map: year by year, the line between 1.9 and 2.1 births per woman moves across more of the earth.
A grayer world

The bottom band is children; the top, the seniors. As the orange band of children thins, the copper band of over-65s thickens. Since 2010 the senior share has risen from 7.6% to 10.2%, while children fell from 27.3% to 24.4%.
This is the cascade to come: fewer children today means fewer workers tomorrow, and a growing number of retirees leaning on each of them.
What if it hadn’t fallen?
This is a laboratory. Rewind the decline and see how many more children we’d have — then fast-forward your own scenario.
Had birth rates never fallen, the world would have received roughly 245 million more births between 2010 and 2024 — nearly the entire population of the United States.
This model is deliberately simple and fully transparent. The orange line plots actual annual births from the data. The dashed line is a what-if: what if the 2010 birth rate had simply been held constant?
Drag the slider to set a target 2030 fertility. The bar shows the implied births — an estimate that assumes the childbearing-age population stays near its current size, as it largely does in the near term. The message holds regardless of the dial: the decline is not random, and it is not small.

The ranking goes from fewest (rank 1) to most (rank 260). India is at 131 with 1.96 births per woman; the United States at 96 with 1.63; Nigeria at 243 with 4.38. Where a country sits tells you which of the two worlds it belongs to.
How close is your country to the 2.1 replacement line? If it’s already below it, your population is quietly contracting — not because people leave, but because children are fewer than elders passing on.

Transformations
- Annual world births = birth rate per 1,000 × population ÷ 1,000. The counterfactual births hold the 2010 birth rate constant against each year’s actual population.
- Replacement rate set to 2.1 births per woman (the conventional UN threshold used with Iowan-level mortality; it varies slightly with mortality).
- Child population = “0–14” band; seniors = “65+” band. 2025 rows in the supplied CSV are partial (fertility, birth rate, infant mortality blank); 2025 is shown only where reported.
- Ranks are ascending by 2024 fertility: rank 1 = fewest births per woman (Macao), rank 260 = most (Chad). Countries missing 2024 data are excluded from the ranking.
Caveats
- Country fertility values are World Bank estimates that blend vital registration, surveys, and UN-modeled data; small countries may be imprecise (e.g. Macao, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico are territories with strong reporting but small populations).
- Global aggregates are population-weighted, so big low-fertility countries (China, India) dominate the average.
- The future numbers in Chapter 7 are an explicit, simplified counterfactual model — not a UN projection. It assumes a near-constant childbearing-age population; treat it as an estimate for understanding, not a forecast.
- No data were invented. Where the source did not report a value, the chart leaves it blank.
